The school holidays are an exciting time for your children, but it can sometimes be difficult to juggle as a parent. If you’re working from home, or you’re lucky enough to spend the time off with your little ones, filling up the free time while keeping your kids occupied can be overwhelming. The key to ensuring everyone is happy over the holidays is having lots of options to choose from. Here’s some ideas to help keep your kids occupied when they’re off school.
If you’re looking for fun activities that don’t break the bank, start in your local area. There is often lots going on that you can access for free, such as events at your local library. In the summer holidays they often offer story times, arts and crafts activities, reading challenges and more that provide something for all ages.
Your local swimming pool may also offer free or reduced rates during the holidays. Swimming is a good way to keep your little ones active, while having fun! Be sure to check out any museums or galleries for special events or exhibitions that may be running throughout the break, especially for children with an artistic streak. If you have a local leisure centre, these can sometimes offer sports clubs or activities that your child might also be interested in.
With the unpredictable weather, or working from home restrictions, you may feel like your options are limited over the holidays. However, there are a variety of activities that can work for you, whether you’re looking for something your kids can do independently, or you’re ready to get involved. Here are some indoor ideas:
If you get lucky with the weather, be sure to make the most of it! When the sun is shining, it’s the perfect opportunity to have a picnic, play some ball games, or just go out and explore. This can be done in a park, field or even your garden.
When the temperature drops but it’s still dry, it’s good to get outside if you can- just be sure to wrap up your little one. Going to your local park is the perfect way to get some fresh air if you find yourself cooped up all day. If you have a nature reserve or hiking trail near you, this can make a fun day out. See which plants and flowers you can spot together to make this more educational and occupy them on your trip.
It can be overwhelming trying to keep your kids occupied during the holidays. However, with these ideas, you can ensure your children enjoy themselves while they’re off school. No matter the weather, keeping your little one happy and busy is the key to having a stress-free break.
