Bringing your baby home is an exciting time for any parent, and comes with many responsibilities, including keeping your baby’s nursery clean and tidy.

As you, your baby, visitors, and siblings will spend a great deal of time in the nursery, cleanliness is very important. On average, it takes up to 12 months for a baby’s immune system to fully develop and, during this time, they can easily encounter harmful bacteria, dust, and germs in their room. Ensuring this space is germ-free is vital to protect them from harmful bacteria and viruses.

By following some simple cleaning practices and routines, you can easily maintain a clean nursery environment to help your baby grow and live a happy, healthy life.

What to consider with visitors

Your family, friends and loved ones will all be eager to visit you and your newborn, but with them they may bring germs which you need to be aware of. It’s completely up to you when you’re comfortable for visitors to pop round and hold your baby.

Some things to consider though include making sure they stay away if they’re unwell, they wash their hands regularly (especially on arrival!) and give your baby enough space. Make sure to have some antibacterial hand gel or foam at the ready, so you know you’re covered.

Regularly dust all surfaces

Shelves, windows, skirting boards and other surfaces can all quickly accumulate dust, so it’s important to regular wipe these down with a microfibre cloth or use an antibacterial spray for even more protection against germs. Don’t forget to dust hanging mobiles or decorative pieces too!

Keep the space organised and declutter

At Milton, we understand it can be difficult to keep on top of clutter when you’re looking after a newborn, but keeping the floor space clear can help keep your nursery germ-free. By tidying away toys or accessories, there is less risk of contamination and therefore transmission – and also prevents trip hazards which is a bonus!

Clean the floor

Following on from the point above, if your floor is kept tidy, you can make sure it’s regularly cleaned. If you have carpets, that means hoovering and removing any stains as soon as possible. If you have hardwood or vinyl flooring, that means mopping or wiping the floors regularly so your crawling baby doesn’t pick up any dirt or germs from high-traffic areas in your home.

Did you know you can use Milton to clean your floors and make them safe for your little ones to explore? All you need is a pack of sterilising tablets, a bucket of water and a mop!

Wash their cot and everything in it

Your baby will spend a lot of their time in their cot, rolling around while they sleep, holding onto the sides when trying to stand up or even chewing on it as they’re teething. Therefore, it’s recommended to wipe down the frame of the crib regularly with antibacterial surface wipes to keep it as clean as possible.

Make sure their bedding and pyjamas are washed regularly too, so there is less germ buildup from sweating, dirty nappies, or dribble. By using antibacterial laundry cleanser tablets from Milton, you can safely disinfect, remove stains and bad smells from your baby’s clothes and bedding.

Sterilise, sterilise, sterilise

Finally, it’s vital that you clean and sterilise your baby’s bottles, breastfeeding equipment and other baby accessories you can find in their nursery such as toys and dummies. There are 5 different ways to sterilise these items and it’s something you must do every 24 hours to ensure your baby is protected against any illnesses.

Everything you need to start sterilising can be found in our new Sterilising Starter Kit and can help you get into a new routine where it becomes second nature. You can shop today from Boots or Amazon, or you can find our hygiene and sterilising range at TescoASDASainsbury’s and other major supermarkets.
